TOEFL® iBT Introduction
Students whose first language is not English need to take an English proficiency exam if they wish to attend an English speaking university. Over 6,000 universities and other institutions around the world accept the TOEFL® exam. The TOEFL® iBT (Internet-based test) has become the new standard in TOEFL® exams. Since the new iBT was introduced in 2005, it has rapidly spread throughout the world. Countries are gradually phasing out the old CBT (computer-based test) in favor of the iBT. The previous CBT only contained sections to test the student’s reading, writing, listening, and grammar. The new iBT contains sections to test all four components of language proficiency: reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
About English1on1’s TOEFL® Practice
English1on1 is an internet/telephone based program that helps students practice for the new speaking part of the iBT. Whether they need help with general speaking, or would like to focus on speaking skills needed for the iBT, English1on1 can help. By using English1on1, students are automatically connected through the Internet or phone to live native English-speaking tutors and test graders. These trained tutors are there to practice sample iBT speaking questions with students one-on-one. English1on1 has modeled these questions after TOEFL® iBT speaking questions which are questions you will encounter when you go to a testing center for the real exam.
Advantages to Using English1on1 iBT Practice
There are many advantages to using English1on1 versus other programs. Many TOEFL® classes have 10, 20, or even 30 or more students in each class, but those classes only have one teacher. Students in those classes might be well prepared for the reading, writing, and listening sections of the exam, but with only one teacher, 30 students cannot all practice the speaking section efficiently. Students’ speaking opportunities in English class are very limited if there is any speaking practice at all. The English1on1 program includes only one student per one tutor. The entire 30-minute session is specifically designed for students to practice their speaking. Other programs allow students to take practice exams and record their voices so they can be graded and returned three to five days later, but English1on1 gives immediate, live feedback. Students discuss the test questions and answers with real tutors immediately following the test. After each session, students can get right to work on practicing problem areas with all of their questions already answered. Students will not ever leave a practice session with any doubts or questions because English1on1’s tutors answer questions and give real feedback. Another advantage to English1on1 is time. Students can choose their own pace to study for the iBT with our tutors. Tutors are always available, so students can choose when is convenient for them to study, and study as often as they would like. Students will also find it much more convenient to study from their own home instead of having to travel to a school to take classes.
How Does English1on1 Help?
English1on1 has professionally trained English tutors to improve students’ speaking for the new iBT TOEFL® and for students to talk with one-on-one. Mastering a language without talking with native speakers is difficult. Even students who come to America often have trouble starting up conversations with strangers or classmates. Students do not need to speak to strangers for practice with English1on1. Students can stay in the comfort of their own homes to practice speaking English with an English tutor. The best way to improve speaking and testing abilities is to practice. English1on1 focuses on speaking test practice with live English tutors to give students real practice and build confidence.
How to Use English1on1 Efficiently
Students learning a language should take the opportunity to speak to real native speakers of that language whenever they can. The more students practice their English, the more those skills used will improve. The best way to use English1on1 is to practice with it regularly. At least twice a week students are required to have sessions with an English1on1 tutor to practice iBT speaking questions. Students should also take notes when the tutor gives feedback from the test questions so that they can practice on their own later. After each session is over, students will know exactly what they need to practice and what they are already doing well.
