How to Prepare Before Your IELTS Session:

To prepare for your IELTS session with your English1on1 tutor, you need to do a few things.  You may need to read a card and answer questions from a PDF file for your session.  You need to check if your computer has a PDF file viewer.   If you can view this file here, you do not need to download a PDF file viewer.  If you cannot view the file, you need to download and install Adobe Reader.  This may take a few minutes, so you should check your computer an hour before you meet for your session.

Next, you should download the card file for the session that you and your tutor will discuss.  The sessions will go in number order, so you should download the card for the next session that you have not discussed.  To find the files, log on to the English1on1 webpage, and click on the “IELTS” link on the left side of the page.  For example, if you are going to practice Session 4, you should download this file for your session:

After your session, you should download the other files, the session PDF, and any samples that come with your session.  You can review the questions and listen to any samples after your session is finished.  You will only need to use your session card PDF file during the session.

Next, you need to sign on to Skype to check your microphone and earphones.  After you have connected your microphone and earphones to the computer, make a test call to the “Skype Test Call.”  With the Skype window open, click on the menu item "Tools" then "Options" at the very bottom.  A new window will open up.  Click on "Audio Settings" on the left side of the screen.  Check your microphone and speaker settings by clicking on the link "Make a free test call."  Adjust your volume so that you can hear and follow the spoken directions to test your microphone.

Finally, you might need to make some notes, so you need to have a sheet of paper and something to write with.  When all of this is completed, you are ready for your IELTS session.
